As you may be aware, or perhaps not, Government departments and agencies often publish books or magazines to help promote and educate the public. Some of these focus on what the agency is doing and others provide vital information to the public. These periodicals are excellent resources and often hold hidden treasures.
One such magazine is State Magazine, which is the magazine produced by the U.S. Department of State. This magazine comes out once a month and is available online, as well as here in ET2 in the SuDocs collection S 1.118:. “State Magazine is published to facilitate communication between management and employees at home and abroad and to acquaint employees with developments that may affect operations or personnel,” but it also tells the stories of employees of the Department of State, giving interesting facts about the places where they work. Check out each issue’s Post of the Month to find out intriguing information about a particular, often exotic, place. Is it also worth noting that historians still treasure the issues of the Department of State Bulletin, which was issued from 1939-1989. It is available on HeinOnline, as well as in print here in ET2 at S 1.3:.
Another important periodical is the Public Health Reports , which is the official journal of the U.S. Public Health Service. It is published 6 times a year and focuses “upon such topics as tobacco control, teenage violence, occupational disease and injury, immunization, drug policy, lead screening, health disparities, and many other key and emerging public health issues.” It also publishes supplements to the journal between 2 to 5 times each year. ET2 has a finding aid of historic Public Health Reports Supplements from 1913 to 1950. You can access the Public Health Reports online through PubMed and here in ET2 at HE 20.30:.
