The Future of the PhD

In last week’s Nature, there was an special about the future of the PhD system. It is a very interesting reading not only for graduate students and faculty, but also for undergraduates who may be thinking on getting into a PhD program.

The main point of the special was that there is not a matching between the supply and the demand of PhDs now, and that it may be worth rethinking the whole PhD (you may read the editorial ”Fix the PhD” here, and the article “Rethinking the PhD” here). There is also an overview of the PhD system in different countries (US, Japan, China, Singapore, India, Germany, Poland, and Egypt).
